LEGALIZED FANTASIES

Juried exhibition of artists from Latgale region “Legalized fantasies”.

Creativity as a state of surrender to a free flight of fancy and imaginative flow is gaining traction at a time when our daily life is so bound by rules, regulations and guidelines for proper conduct. Overscrupulous limitations imposed all over the place can drain one’s spirits to a degree of apathetic indifference or trigger an undue denial of legitimate constraints.

Artistic license is a fundamental starting point for a well-argued discussion, first, about the validity of existing rules and then about the need to expand the domain of rights. Provided that changing specific rules, regulations or social norms is not an end in itself, an artist can become the cornerstone of a democratic society – an intermediary who points to the boundaries of the day and invites to re-examine them in terms of tightening or loosening present restrictions or else to validate their necessity.

How have we experienced this year of altered, limited or maybe augmented interaction? What fantasies have overwhelmed the artists of the Latgale region? Perhaps attempts to make sense of this period are still in progress and will materialise artistically only in the years to come, yet even at this point, a careful eye will definitely see creative pursuits of a new liberation beginning to take shape.

You are welcome to see, feel and enjoy the realities of the past year, legalized through the creative fantasies of 42 artists.
