Pēteris Martinsons
The collection of Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre includes the works of remarkable Latvian ceramist, born in Daugavpils Pēteris Martinsons (1931-2013), which were donated to the Centre in June 2013. The collection consists of 340 art works: 314 ceramic works and 24 ink drawings of different size.
Martinsons` ceramic works are characterized by the diversity of ideas and expressions, as well as the use of different materials, techniques and places of manufacture; however the ink drawings are striking examples of the author’s meditations, mind and hand trainings.
The Collection includes some early pottery and ceramics of the artist, reliefs with the images of literary heroes, monumental sculptures, the collection of functional and stylised dishes, fragile porcelain works of art, as well as realistic creatures -crows, lions and dogs- and tectonic constructions - towers, cages, figures and sketches, made of different materials.
In future the collection will be replenished with P.Martinsons` personal belongings and evidences of his life and creative work.
